Samuel Chooses David Bible Craft
“People look at the outside of a person, but the Lord looks at the heart.” (1 Samuel 16:7)
Samuel the prophet was sent by God to anoint the next king of Israel. He went to the house of Jesse, expecting to find the king among Jesse’s eldest sons – tall, strong, impressive-looking young men. But as Samuel looked at each one, God said no. No. No. None of these are the one.
Then Jesse brought out his youngest son – a humble shepherd boy named David. He was small. He was overlooked. He was tending sheep while his brothers stood before the prophet. But when Samuel saw David, God said, “This is the one. Anoint him.”
This craft features character cutouts from the story, inviting your children to roleplay and explore what happened. As they move Samuel, Jesse, the sons, and David around, they can act out the moment God chose the unlikely one – not because of how he looked, but because of who he was in his heart.
Use this story to discuss the verse with your children: What does it mean that God looks at the heart? Why did God choose David instead of his older brothers? Help them understand that God doesn’t judge by size, strength, or appearance. He looks deeper. He sees character, humility, and faith – the things that truly matter.
