Abraham's Altars point to God
Wherever Abraham went he made an altar to God. Unlike other people around him, who worshiped physical things they could not see; like rocks, the sun, trees, animals, etc, Abraham’s altars were a physical presence that represented his connection to God. The pile of rocks didn’t represent God, but rather his relationship and connection with God. So wherever he went, he built an alter that pointed towards God.
